Taxi driver nabbed for hit-and-run
A taxi driver was arrested after a wellknown King Sabata Dalindyebo municipal traffic officer was killed in a hit-and-run incident on the notorious R61 route on Friday.
Mthatha police spokesperson Captain Dineo Koena told the Daily Dispatch on Sunday that the officer, 58, was hit by a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi at about 11pm near the police camp, where he and his colleagues were managing a roadblock on Friday.
Koena said his name was being withheld until all his relatives had been notified.
“A 28-year-old was arrested and faces charges of culpable homicide and failure to stop when instructed to do so by law enforcement officers.”
She said he would appear in court soon, most likely on Monday.
KSD municipal spokesperson Sonwabo Mampoza confirmed the officer had worked in the municipality’s public safety department.
He said an official announcement would be made by municipal bosses on Monday.
