In an effort to promote road safety, tourism and improve the lives of people in rural communities, the second annual SUV Challenge is back, with the promise of a memorable motoring experience.

The founder and organiser of the three-day event, Siya Mbete, said the SUV Challenge was a holistic event that aimed to have an impact on the lives of Eastern Cape citizens.

Members of the media, stakeholders and keen motorists will embark on a journey from Nelson Mandela Bay to Coffee Bay, starting on October 31.

The event will start with a gala dinner, where Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane, transport minister Fikile Mbalula and transport MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe will be in attendance.

Participants will sign a pledge to strictly abide by the rules of the road.

The driving experience will see charity stopovers at Mgqeshana Great Place, Mqhekezweni Great Place and Coffee Bay, with career and business expos in those communities to donate food parcels, road reflectors and sanitary products.

“Looking at some of the challenges the province is facing, like high unemployment and lack of opportunities, this concept hopes to inspire the youth and bring tourism opportunities to the province. It also aims to highlight issues of road safety,” Mbete said.

Road safety messages would be communicated via social media and on radio.

Last week Tikana Gxothiwe encouraged MPLs to support the event

“The SUV challenge has become a vehicle to drive social justice,” Mbete said.

“We have partnered with a number of departments including the provincial department of transport, health, economic development and education, to come on board.

“This year we have partnered with tertiary institutions such as Fort Hare, Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela and Rhodes University.

“The universities’ science and innovation will conduct a career expo at the locations.”

100 vehicles are set to depart from Nelson Mandela Bay with an official traffic escort.

Mbete encouraged adventure seekers who want to be involved in the challenge to log on to their website: www.suvchallenge.co.za (http://www.suvchallenge.co.za)
