Berlin set for racing spectacular event

- MFUNDO PILISO

The prestigious Berlin November traditional horse racing spectacle will see its sixth edition take centre stage in Berlin next weekend.

The event is expected to draw more than 45,000 racing enthusiasts and fashionistas who will be entertained by wellknown artists including Afrosoul star and Ndicel’ikiss hitmaker Berita, a Walter Sisulu University graduate.

Event founder and organiser Luthando Bara told journalists at the Chairmans Bistro and Lounge at the East London beachfront on Thursday that people should brace themselves for a whirlwind festival of racing.

“It’s all systems go and Berlin will be a hive of activity in the build-up as ensure revellers have a time of their lives,” Bara said.

“The Berlin November has just been sanctioned as a provincial signature event by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA).”

Bara said the premier event would be preceded by Mr & Miss Berlin November to be staged at 6.30pm next Friday at Hemingways.

“People will see a bevy of beauties and lads vying for the coveted crown.”

The horse racing event, to be themed “classic monochrome”, will boast glitz, glamour and equestrian-inspired elegance.

“A new feature will be the allwomen race which will prove to be a thriller.”

He revealed that, on the entertainment side, Bongo Maffin would be the headline act in the musical extravaganza which would also feature Andile Mpisana and the Jaziel Brothers.

“[We’ll also have] Lahleza, gospel giants Butho and Bethusile, MSK and Luu and other local acts such as DJ LV, DJ Nunuza, 98%, Welo, Anga, King Joe and Lento.

“It’s going to be a banger as they bring the roof down.”

Bara said he was thrilled that the Berlin November had finally been recognised for its contribution to promoting the Eastern Cape as a preferred destination through sports tourism.

However he highlighted the lack of support from provincial government, saying the event needed a more hands-on approach from government if was to continue to grow.

“When we talk about support, we are not talking about money.

“For instance DRDAR [the department of rural development and agrarian reform] should be supporting the event by being there on the day.

“They can make sure that all horses are healthy, because if one horse is not well that can infect all the other horses.”
