EASTERN CAPE LIQUOR BOARD WARNS COMMUNITIES AGAINST CONSUMPTION OF THE HARMFUL CONCOCTIONS
The ban of sale of liquor has inadvertently exacerbated illicit production and sale of home-brewed beer in the Eastern Cape. While it is the most affordable beer and has increasingly become the most accessible beer during the current suspension of liquor sale, we wish to send a caution to communities that they must take responsibility for their own lives and desist from buying and consuming this deadly substance. During Alert Levels 5 and 4, Eastern Cape Province experienced disturbingly high rate of fatalities resulting from consumption of the home-made beer. This kind of home brewed beer is generally made from a concoction of malt, loaves of yeast, pineapples, sugar and bread, and many other substances such as methylated spirits and battery fluid. Its attraction chiefly lies in affordability and accessibility. Needless to accentuate the fact that consumption of illegally and informally produced alcohol and surrogate alcohol may pose a health hazard due to contamination or a higher potential ethanol content. We encourage members of the community to be vigilant and promptly report cases of illegal sale of liquor in their respective areas. Where such transgressions are identified and reported necessary steps will be taken to curb such behaviour. Members of the community are encouraged to report to the nearest police station or call Eastern Cape Liquor Board Toll Free Number 080 000 0420 or WhatsApp number 076 403 6223.
