Kwem and Chippa in negotiations

- VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

Negotiations are under way to keep star player Augustine Kwem at Chippa United.

The player’s agents say they have given the Chilli Boys a twomonth extension on his contract until the end of the season and that they have been speaking to the club about him staying in the Bay for next season.

Chippa general manager Morgan Mammila says he has no doubt the 22-year-old Nigerian player will still be at Chippa next season.

Earlier in July, Kwem’s representative, Akorede Huthman of Gidi Sport in the UK, said they had recalled their player and instructed him not to participate in any activities at Chippa. Gidi Sport accused Chippa of not following the correct protocol by extending Kwem’s contract without the player’s knowledge.

Huthman, who heads Gidi Sport, said his player had signed a one-year contract with the Chilli Boys which had lapsed on June 30, but there was an option to renew or extend.

But in doing so, the club would have to notify the player and the PSL of their wishes in writing.

Club COO Lukhanyo Mzinzi dismissed the claim at the time.

But now that PSL clubs have been given the go-ahead by the government to start training, Kwem has been spotted training with the Chilli Boys.

Previously Huthman said he was not willing to accept an extension from Chippa because he feared his player would not be given game time after the disagreement.

However, it seems Huthman has had a change of heart.

He says they are now in negotiation with Chippa to extend the centre forward’s contract.
