Chilli Boys’ Moyo determined to close season on high

Kevin Moyo has been successful at Chippa United and he is now determined to close the season on a high.

Moyo, 27, together with his twin brother Elvis, joined the Port Elizabeth club from Zimbabwean side FC Platinum in July 2019.

He has not missed an Absa Premiership fixture this season and hopes to play the remaining six matches.

“It has been a good season for me considering that it’s my first season here in the team and if you look at the number of games I have played,” Moyo said.

“I pray and hope that I will get the opportunity to play in the last six games. But it’s not easy just getting a spot in the team so I will be fighting for my place.

“Going three months without playing is different. We are not used to that and it feels like we are starting afresh now. I am working hard, pushing and hoping that I will get an opportunity to play.”

The Chilli Boys are due to enter the biobubble in Johannesburg on Monday as they prepare for their first competitive fixture against Cape Town at Orlando Stadium next Friday.

Moyo said the players were excited to get back on the field again after four months.

“Things are okay with the new coach, Lehlohonolo Seema, and we are still learning the way that he wants us to play. I know it is going to be different but we are getting information on how we will be playing from the technical team so that it does not affect our game.”

He said Seema wanted Chippa to play a similar style of football to that of his former team, Bloemfontein Celtic.

“He wants us to play a passing game going forward. He wants us to be more attacking in our play.

“We must hold the ball and we must not just lose possession. So that is how he wants us to play.

“It’s nothing new to us because even with former coach Norman Mapeza we also played a passing game and even with coach Rulani Mokwena, he was also concerned about keeping the ball.”

Asked if the players did not have any concerns with resumption of the league while the country was dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, Moyo said: “There is nothing we can really do about what is happening around the world.

“What we have to do is focus on playing football. We are soccer players and we have to adjust to whatever change occurs. But the most important thing for us is to follow all the protocols to avoid this coronavirus.

“I think also watching these guys from Europe playing has helped us because we have been asking ourselves ‘how are we going to play without the fans?’

“I am not sure if they will also put in sound when we play. I would love to hear some vuvuzelas on match day.

“We are ready for anything, especially if you look at our fixture for the first game. We are playing against Cape Town City and they are just above us with a point.

“That is also an important game that we must not waste. We will try our best to save the team, and I think finishing in the top eight will be a bonus. But I think saving the status is the most important thing.”
