Residents wait in vain for BCM to fix sewage

Residents from Mdantsane to Gonubie are frustrated with sewage problems and say their cries to BCM for help are falling on deaf ears.

Zone 3 resident Mafu Ndaleni said his problem had been going on for two weeks.

“Sewage comes out of my pipe when other houses flush their toilets. I’d say the real problem, which has been ongoing for two months, is the manhole nearby,” Ndaleni said.

“My problem started on Wednesday last week,” Sindiswa Majingi said. “When I flushed my toilet faecal matter rose up.

“The toilets are now full, both inside the house and in the outside facility — I cannot use them.”

Thabisa Mhlaimpe said on Thursday evening there was raw sewage in the drain and also in the toilet.

“My brother went to report the matter on Friday morning at the NU6 civic centre.

“They said they’d come and fix it. We ’ ve been waiting since then.

“I have to carry my blind uncle to my neighbour when he wants to relieve himself. [On Monday] my brother went again to the civic centre — we’re still waiting.”

Gonubie resident Donné Friedmann has had sewage flowing into her yard since Friday.

“I’ve called and called, and I’ve been told that there’s a procurement process, or sometimes the phone isn’t picked up at any of the supplied numbers. Surely with something like this you can make an exception,” asked Friedmann.

“It flows through my yard and down the driveway. I’ve had to use chlorine to clean it. I have a small child.”

The residents are worried about the need for strict Covid19 sanitation and hygiene protocols, as well as the health risk of letting their children play outside at the moment.

BCM spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya had not replied to questions sent on Monday by print deadline on Tuesday.
