Madeira shooting accused abandons bail bid
The man accused of killing his wife inside the Madeira police station in Mthatha has abandoned his bail bid.
Yandisa Daniso, 42, made a brief appearance in the Mthatha magistrate’s court on Friday, where he was scheduled to start his bail hearing.
He appeared before chief magistrate Nozuko Mviko.
Wearing a maroon blazer and blue sweater, Daniso occasionally glanced at the gallery, and spoke to a man and woman seated behind him.
Regional National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luxolo Tyali confirmed Daniso had decided not to pursue bail.
The case was postponed to October 26 for further investigation.
Daniso faces charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public after he allegedly shot and killed his 28-year-old wife, Nwabisa Dwaza.
The state alleges that the new wife, who was wearing her makoti attire, was trying to obtain a domestic violence protection order against the accused when she was gunned down.
Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Liziwe Ntshinga described the shooting as a “premeditated onslaught”.
A group of people protesting against the possibility of the accused getting bail gathered outside the court singing and chanting slogans on Friday.
Lonwabo Rhotho, of Justice Action Takers, said Daniso had made a good decision by abandoning bail.
“We want him to remain behind bars. I feel like that’s a step in the right direction. We are happy,” Rhotho said.
