Covid and misdirected praises

-

Isee no connection between an incompetent government with a collapsed health sector and a high recovery rate from Covid-19.

In the same way, I see no connection between some immunity to Covid-19 and good leadership.

SA still has a high infection rate, not just for Covid-19 but for other ailments like diabetes and HIV/Aids.

The claim by some commentators that wearing masks means that SA has taken the virus seriously is unreliable.

At what stage has such a claim become an acceptable medical explanation for a decrease in Covid-related deaths?

Most people wear masks in public spaces because they can’t access shops and offices without one. Even worse, many people wear masks incorrectly and interact on streets and in villages without protection.

Desperate to heap praise on President Cyril Ramaphosa and health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, some commentators tell us that some government competency deserves applause. What applause? The government failed in all its promises with regard to preparation of beds and the funds were looted by politicians.

Again, blaming Donald Trump for the US Covid-19 tragedy is absurd.

The protesters must also take the blame there. In the same way SA, the faith and resilience of ordinary citizens are the real reason we have so far weathered this Covid-19 storm.

Whether they prayed, chanted or used herbs, they deserve a pat on the back. Otherwise, if emotional leadership and an advanced health sector were the most effective tools then this virus would not have humbled advanced nations in America, Europe and Asia.
