Pupils at three East London schools have some heartwarming stories of active citizenship to share.

Uviwe, Umtiza and EL Secondary schools are part of a Brand SA campaign called Play Your Part.

With the hashtags #PlayYourPart and #GetInvolved, the campaign started on September 16 and ended on Wednesday when Grade 11 and 12 pupils uploaded videos they made to Brand SA’s Facebook page on the community-building work they have been involved in.

Brand SA will award R50,000 to the winning school.

“The Play Your Part school campaign is aimed at engaging with pupils to remind them of how their role as active citizens can contribute towards a brighter future for their communities, the country and a positive nation brand.

“We are aware of the challenges that the pandemic has brought to pupils and teachers,” said marketing manager Sithembile Ntombela.

“Hence, we aim to find ways of adding value, where pupils can have access to information like study guides, as well as support on platforms like social media and local radio stations.”

Baphiwe Manjeza, 18, of Umtiza High, shared how she contributes towards her community.

“I donate clothes to the needy, and I visit the nearest old age home and assist the elderly by fetching their medication at the local clinic.

“I also make sure I encourage children to tackle life challenges in a correct way.”

East London Secondary pupil Kuhle Sicatsha is a member of the Youth for a Safe SA organisation, where the focus is on how to be a law-abiding citizen, and the consequences of breaking the law.

“We are given lectures by different government and private stakeholders.

“Nedbank once shared tips on how to handle our savings and on being financially savvy,” she said.

“Doing these things, we hope to create a better SA for ourselves as the upcoming generation, and to enjoy it to the fullest.”
