‘ Heart fulfilled’ by helping others in running NPOs

Lumka Cube, 25, has been in the community development sector for five years and runs two Port Elizabeth-based non-profit organisations, Rising Sun Foundation and the Grab and Go Foundation.

“My career in serving started in 2016 when I was elected to serve as a SRC member at Nelson Mandela University. That inspired me to see the necessity and importance of giving back. I ’ ve always felt the need to do something impactful, especially because of my own experiences. I understand what it means to not have means or resources. The idea of giving back fulfils my heart,” she said.

“Rising Sun Foundation is a registered NPO that seeks to improve the education system of the Eastern Cape through programmes and tutorials. I recently launched a soup kitchen through Grab and Go Foundation, a huge initiative that feeds homeless people all over Port Elizabeth.”

Cube says community development does not get enough from government. It is also a struggle to access funds allocated in government budgets.

“I think the government should look at the bigger picture. Running an NPO without financial assistance is difficult.

“However, the support from everyone on my social media has been amazing. The support from lecturers at Nelson Mandela University, councillors, the public and business owners from different sectors, has been immensely appreciated.”

Cube said her main support came from God. I believe God

“has given me this purpose to be able to give back to people and run these organisations. That is something I never take for granted. I’ve also received support from my family and my amazing partner.

“These organisations would not function without the support of the team members.”
