Snyman blasts Warriors attack ’

- ALVIN REEVES

Jacques Snyman stroked a sensational century to help the Knights seize control of the 4Day Domestic Series match against the Warriors at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Monday.

In his first match for his new franchise, Snyman made 109 while opening the batting before he was eventually run out by Matthew Breetzke shortly after lunch. By stumps on day one, the Knights had reached a commanding 405 for five with Farhaan Behardien on 67 not out. But it was Snyman s effort before lunch that was so remarkable albeit against a Warriors team bereft of six regular players because of Covid-19.

Making a century before lunch is a rare feat and that s exactly what Snyman accomplished on the opening day of the season. He flailed a hapless Warriors attack reaching his century off only 71 balls.

According to CSA statistician Andrew Samson, this is the first time that a batsman has scored 100 before lunch on the first day of a domestic first-class four-day match since Rilee Rossouw for the then Eagles against the Titans at Centurion in 2010.

He faced seven more deliveries before being run out having hit 18 fours and two sixes.

He shared in an opening stand of 164 in 28 overs with Matthew Kleinveldt, who added a sedate 73 before he fell victim to Jon-Jon Smuts.

Pite van Biljon rattled up a quickfire 53 until Mthiwekhaya Nabe had him caught behind by Rudi Second.

Leftarm quick Marco Jansen snapped up his first wicket for the Warriors removing Raynard van Tonder for a well-played 85, also caught by Second behind the wicket.
