LONGER STINT

New Chippa United signing seeks lengthy stay

- VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

In his third stint at Chippa United, Thamsanqa Sangweni now wants to make Port Elizabeth his permanent home.

The Chilli Boys announced Sangweni’s return on Friday ahead of their Dstv Premiership fixture against Bloemfontein Celtic.

Though his contract is until the end of the season, Sangweni says he will work towards getting a few more years added come the end of the season.

The midfielder has enjoyed regular game time at Chippa in two previous stints and even captained the team before his departure in 2019.

Sangweni was with Eswatini Premier League giants Mbabane Highlanders before coming to the Eastern Cape.

Though he is well travelled, having also played for Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, Sangweni admits he spent his best years at Chippa.

“I would like to stay longer with the team but that will be up to me because in order for that to happen I will have to deliver in terms of my performance,” the 31-year-old said.

“With the support I have been receiving from the coach and my teammates it has helped me a lot to quickly adjust and get my footing.

“I am very happy to have been given this opportunity to return to the club

“I have been here before and it is also nice to return to the hands of coach Dan Malesela.

“I have worked with him before and I understand his style of play. I was happy to see some of the players that I left behind are still with the team.

“I know that things will not be the same as when I was here before but the most important thing is that I am here to help the team do better.

“The welcoming has been overwhelming and has made me feel at home.”

The midfielder did not waste any time and hit the ground running in making his first appearance for his team in their 11 draw against Celtic on Saturday.

“The game was okay but there will always be a room for improvement,” he said.

“But a point from home is better than nothing. We are looking forward to our next match which is against TS Galaxy on Saturday.”
