KZN, Southern Cape crowned champs at ELGC

- ATHENKOSI TSOTSI

It was Kwazulu-natal and Southern Cape who came out on top in the SA Country Districts interprovincial while it was a disappointing conclusion for Border at the East London Golf Club.

KZN topped the A section with eight points after they won all four of their games. In their final round four match against North West, they showed class by winning 9½2½.

Boland finished in second place, followed by North West in third, Northern Cape grabbed fourth while the Free State finished last. They had the worst showing in the section, losing all of their four games.

Gavin Sole, Chris Erasmus, Thomas Lovett were all tied first; they all collected seven points.

Southern Cape was the standout team in the B section and topped the group. Their dominance was telling as they featured greatly in the MVP list; Damian Osner won the MVP, while CJ van Wyk, James Murray, Ivan Williams, and Jordan Duminy were tied second. They were joined by Border’s Gabriel de Jongh.

Border finished the tournament in third place with three points; they had one win, one draw and two losses.

On the final day they faced Mpumalanga and it turned into a tight encounter. They drew the match 6-6.

In morning foursomes, the teams both won two matches. They would also cancel each other out in the singles drawing 4-4. Fellow Ngantweni, Alec Stander, Gabriel de Jongh, and Werner Potgieter all notched victories for Border.

Eastern Province had a good run in the tournament; they ended in second place in the B section with six points.

They won three games and only lost to the eventual winner of the section Southern Cape.

Limpopo finished fourth behind Border with Mpumalanga in last place.

The week’s tournament was able to provide much needed game time for the country’s amateur players from non-golf traditional areas.

It also provided a platform for some the SA’S rising teenage sensations of whom some are in the SA team.

The next tournament at the East London Golf Club will be the Border Senior Open to be played on June 20-21.
