Sunshine Coast women’s group help wherever they can

- MATTHEW FIELD

The Sunshine Coast Women’s Group based in Kidd’s Beach is committed to helping members of their community, as well as the rest of East London.

Jenny Thorn, chair of the group, said the organisation’s main goal was to help others wherever possible.

“It started off as the Women’s Agricultural Union of the Border area, but now we do it as a fundraiser and social group,” Thorn said.

“Once a month we meet for tea and chat as a membership. We get proposals on whom to help and each month we decide where to put our bucks.

“We support the R72 Running Group here in Kidd’s Beach. They take youth off the streets and show them how to run.” Another of their ongoing projects involves donating food to local old age homes, with Charms Fresh Veg in Kidd’s Beach donating the produce.

Charm’s owner Charmain Young said she had worked with SCWG for the last two years.

“We’ve been doing this since 2020. That’s when I also started selling second-hand books for them so they could raise funds.”

DJ Sobey matron Abigail Oliphant said the old age home was grateful for the regular donations of fruit and vegetables.

“At DJ Sobey, we are happy because it helps a lot. “We try to give our people fruit and veg every day. It comes in very handy,” she said.

Thorn said the group also donated other items every month that the home needed.

“DJ Sobey has a huge need for cosmetics, lotion, Vaseline and all those sorts of things.

“Even little things like facecloths. We supplied them with 67 facecloths recently.”

Sunshine Coast Women’s Group welcomes any donations.

“There’s a huge need for wool and warm clothes. “The nearby villages have a lot of poor children who need clothes,” Thorn said.

While Thorn is based in Kidd’s Beach, the organisation’s membership base stretches from Kayser’s Beach to Winterstrand.

Kidd’s Beach Ratepayers Association chair Stephen Keet said residents were grateful for the help the women’s group provided to the community.
