Lockdown break-ups inspire EL marriage guru to pen second book

- ANELISA GUSHA

East London pastor and broadcaster Khaya Maphinda has penned his second book on marriage.

Maphinda, a presenter on local Christian radio station Link FM, is a registered marriage officer and has 20 years’ experience as a marriage counsellor.

The founder of the Family Enrichment and Restoration Institute is a firm believer that healthy and stable families lead to a stable society and country.

Maphinda will launch A Sustainable Marriage: Building a Marriage that Lasts on Saturday.

His first book, Marriage Encounter: Dilemmas and Delusions, focused on guiding single people to choose the right life partners.

“The second book is premised on an assumption that one has read the first, and it is foregrounded on the basic yet fundamental reality that success in marriage is not guaranteed but achieved,” Maphinda said.

“It is a book empowering married couples on how best to handle different situations that one may face, from communication to family finances, blended families, conflict management, including infidelity, and many more.”

He was inspired to write the book as a result of the number of couples who had separated after the Covid-19 lockdown.

“The writing of this book has been necessitated by a dire need to have a tool to address challenges that engulf families as a result of unresolved conflicts and misunderstandings, particularly between married couples.

“This became much more evident during the lockdown period, when families were supposed to enjoy uninterrupted time together but instead had to confront challenges they had been avoiding.

“The divorce statistics continue to skyrocket across the globe and we are fast becoming a society where children have to be raised by single parents, when that situation could be averted.”

The book targeted both married and unmarried people.

“In some of the chapters I try to show single people how to build marriages that can last, and for the married people, I am advising them on what to do to nurture a fulfilling, lasting union.”
