Tell me about the Book Dash process of creating a children’s book.

Julia Norrish: When you write a book, you obviously have a writer, who comes up with a story, but it’s not just them making the story come alive. You need an illustrator, who makes the pictures, and they’re as important as the writer

In 1931, the governor of Hunan province in China banned Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland because “animals should not use human language”. for a children’s book. The pictures and the words have to work together otherwise it’s not going to be a good book. Sometimes, the writer is also the illustrator but most often it’s not. You’ve also got someone who puts the book together, and that’s who we call the designer.

How do you decide what to publish?

JN: Every book publisher has a guide that helps them decide what to publish. Our main priority is African picture books for 0 to five-year-olds.

What makes a good children’s book?

JN: If a child wants to read it over and over, that’s a sign it’s a good children’s book. For me, anything that gets a child to read it again and again – and that’s usually a catchy story, beautiful pictures and something that inspires curiosity.

The Harry Potter books were the first children’s books on the New York Times’s bestseller list since EB White’s Charlotte’s Web in 1952.
