LIGHT FOR THE WOMEN OF SOUTH AFRICA

- Mihlali Mtyi

As we wave goodbye to Freedom Month, we are grateful for the opportunities and sacrifices that were once made for us to enjoy the freedom that we have today.

But with so many events taking place, such as the previous leaders’ debate and the upcoming elections, we seem to have forgotten the tragic pain the women of South Africa endure every day. Thousands of women are raped, murdered and threatened on a daily basis.

We forget that women are the backbone of SA. We forget the great work of iconic women such as the late Albertina Sisulu and Winnie Madikizela-mandela, and we forget the march that women took to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956 that was led by the late Lilian Ngoyi and Sophia Williams-de Bruyn – women who have played an enormous role in uplifting the rights of women in SA.

As a nation we need to acknowledge the great women of our country and the spectacular work they have done, because when it’s all said and done, women are the true backbone of SA. They make this country the rainbow nation it is today.

However, it is slowly becoming a dark nation when they can’t even go out for a walk without having to look behind them. Let’s rebuild SA and make it better for the upcoming generation.
