Elastic stretches patience

-

I AM so sick and tired of walking around different malls just to find a good dress/pants, blouse or skirts.

All one sees is garments cheaply made with elastic. Every dress, skirt or blouse is made of elastic, elastic, elastic.

We pay exorbitant prices for cheaply made garments with inferior-quality cotton knits or trilobal, or cheap floral cotton. Major stores stock these garments from China, vietnam, India, etc, with the majority from China which never last. These stores think we are stupid and gullible, that we don’t know about quality and style. They think we will buy anything be- cause they give us no choice. Many of the major stores have lost it: their buyers don’t have a passion for style nor do they know what is fashion.

The Chinese are growing their economy fast enough with cheap products, one size fits all – elastic is used to expand if you take a large size. I wonder if they have pattern makers, pattern graders, designers, etc, as I personally don’t see any styles these days.

Must we pay R500 for a dress and in a few months the elastic gives up and the dress has to be dumped?

A major store manager told me the buyers had messed up their range for Christmas because they did their buying in July for the festive season.

I am also disgusted with the ranges for teenagers. They are very expensive, and one cannot find something good without exposing your assets.

Is there someone in the major chain stores listening to consumers, or will the government penalise them for maximising profits with inferiorquality products? Will they now focus on our proudly SA label for which people can be employed as pattern makers/graders, designers, etc? Can the textile union do something? LORETTA RAJKUMAR
