No happily ever after, only disaster

- DEBASHINE THANGEVELO

AFAIRY-TALE wedding with a reality bites ending – that pretty much sums up model and reality TV star Kim Kardashian’s wedding to NBA player Kris Humphries on August 20 last year. Seventy-two days later, she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

Well, I guess it was bound to happen. After all, Humphries was more of a rebound-cumsubstitute for NFL player Reggie Bush, who was reluctant to “put a ring on it”.

While Humphries was gobsmacked to find she wanted out, Kardashian told ABC News: “After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision.

“I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.”

The media, feeling somewhat exploited about having given so much mileage to the couple and their nuptials, intimated this union was nothing more than an elaborate publicity stunt, which was vehemently denied by the Kardashian matriarch, Kris Jenner.

And for all this Kardashian became the butt (pun intended) of many jokes, with actresscomedienne host Joan Rivers jibing: “Why did Kim Kardashian’s marriage only last 72 days? Because she only knew 71 positions.”

With interest in the divorce – not in the popular Kardashian who is estimated to be worth $35 million (R285.5m) – now having waned substantially, E! Entertainment has decided to showcase their lavish wedding in a two- part special.

Viewers will see stepdad Bruce Jenner walk Kardashian, dressed in a gorgeous Vera Wang gown, down the aisle, her cute nephew Mason as the ring bearer, friends Demi Lovato, Eva Longoria and Mario Lopez party with the new bride, the Lohan clan make a fashion statement and the newlyweds cut their towering vanilla-andchocolate wedding cake.

Although they looked deliriously happy and seemed completely drunk on love while on honeymoon on the Amalfi coast in Italy, the fissures started to widen on the couple’s return home.

Talk about a reality check – not to mention the cheques for Kardashian’s story!

(parts 1 and 2) will air at 10pm on Sundays, January 15 and 22.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand: the most-talked about break-up at the moment. Married in October 2010, rumours of marriage troubles were confirmed when the couple announced they were to divorce on December 30 last year. Looks like someone wants a fresh start in 2012.

Renée Zellweger and Kenny Chesney: they courted for four months before tying the knot in in 2006. The marriage was annulled four months later.

Britney Spears and Jason Alexander: this has to be the shortest marriage ever! The popstar got hitched in Las Vegas in 2004 and had the marriage annulled 55 hours later. Oops!

Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley: while it took them a year to take the plunge, the couple filed for divorce three months after exchanging their vows in November 2003.
