Give money to Childline

-

LAST week, six-year-old Franklin Prins’s body was dragged out of a murky river in Bonnievale, Western Cape.

He was murdered and found with a belt around his neck… the life of a harmless child, who could not defend himself, snuffed out.

Where is the value of innocence? And this was done at the height of Child Protection Week.

Children are vulnerable to all forms of human deceit, of which the most common is kidnapping.

Do you remember little Maddy McCann who went missing from her parents’ bungalow in Portugal sparking a worldwide manhunt?

Social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, are a breeding ground for predators.

Of all the evils in the world, the worst thing one could do is to snatch a child from his or her parents.

Parents will ponder for ever the moment they let their attention wander in that mall or said yes to the joyride, conjuring scenes of horrible cruelty, living and reliving them in an everlasting torment of self-inflicted perdition.

It is sad to see non-profit organisations, such as Childline, suffering because of a lack of funds.

Maybe this is a reality call for the likes of Kenny Kunene, the SA Football Association (Safa) and the South African government.

So, Kenny, instead of buying the Zuma painting for three times the original price and using it to light a fire for a braai, give some money to Childline.

To the head honchos at Safa, instead of paying R100 000 to a sangoma and R24 million to a soccer coach, give a quarter to Childline.

And to JZ, instead of allocating about R59 million for the upkeep of the royal household, please give some to Childline.

If only one percent of the above amounts were pledged to Linda Naidoo and her team, it would keep them afloat for many years and certainly many more children’s lives would be saved.

We as parents have a social and filial responsibility to look after our children and we must not shirk from that obligation, for the world is full of all kinds of crazy nuts, paedophiles and serial killers who have no place in society.

Every day should be celebrated as Child Protection Day. KEVIN GOVENDER
