Safa identifies five candidates

- SOCCER

THE SA Football Association’s technical committee started the process of appointing the new Bafana Bafana head coach yesterday.

The committee developed a set of criteria for the appointment of the coach, key of which was that Safa would only consider a local for the position.

This eliminated a large number of the potential applicants from other countries.

The committee developed 12 criteria that it believes are critical for the coach, then identified five coaches who they decided best matched those criteria, based on their knowledge of locals.

The five coaches who were identified are: Steve Komphela Gordon Igesund Gavin Hunt Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba Neil Tovey All of the coaches have agreed to be interviewed, and will be provided with the agreed set of criteria and given a maximum of two hours for a presentation and the interview.

This process will start next Wednesday and end on June 18.

The selected candidate would be presented to Safa’s national executive committee on June 30 or earlier, the South African soccer body said.

The selection panel will consist members of the technical committee with the Safa technical director and chief executive, and the chairman of the international board/commercial committee.

“We are also going to approach Jomo Sono and Kaizer Motaung to serve on the panel,” said Safa chief Robin Petersen.

“Additional members might also be appointed in broader consultation.” – Safa
