Star Jet is heading for orbit

- MICHAEL CLOWER

STAR Jet, trained by former Dennis Drier assistant Mike Robinson on one of the best gallops in the country, looks a sound bet at Kenilworth tomorrow.

The Jet Master filly impressed when third on her debut behind the highly regarded Solid Sister and Wednesday’s easy winner Girl’s Best Friend. She stands out against the three-year-olds in the All To Come Maiden.

“She has come on nicely since her run,” says Robinson. “Also she is a big-striding filly so I think she should be able to handle the ground if it’s soft.” Justin Snaith introduces Nemesia, a R400 000 Trippi half-sister to Gold Medallion winner Carnadore and says: “She should run a nice race although she just might need it first time.”

First Favour has been running well and, according to Carl Burger, “it won’t worry her if it’s wet.”

This could be an important point if there is more rain. The wetter the better for Tobe Astar but, unfortunately for punters, the fourth race is his first outing for three months. “He can run well fresh but we gave him a break and he will probably need the run,” says Candice Robinson. “However he is definitely better in soft ground.”

Gareth Grey has also shown his ability to handle testing conditions and has the form to be a real contender in this race, although Paddy Kruyer cautions that “he is not the soundest of horses.”

Dean Kannemeyer, who won a two-year-old race at Durbanville on Wednesday, runs five in the opening juvenile and three of them are newcomers. “These are nice horses. Scorpio Rising will be right there and In Control will come on a lot from his debut.”

The Snaith pair Little Pearl and Oceans Edge both won on the same day on their fourth start in times less than a fifth of a second apart. “There is very little between them,” confirms their trainer before adding significantly, “If it should be soft then Oceans Edge would be favoured.”

The Joey Ramsden two-year-olds are also running well and Var newcomer Vauclair is a R350 000 son of Majorca winner and Cape Fillies Guineas runner-up Wild Aster.

Dressed In Cotton has losses to recover in the third after just finding one too good for him on his last two outings and starting odds-on last time. “I think he would handle the soft. He works pretty well in sand and that’s normally an indication,” says Darryl Hodgson who has booked Grant van Niekerk to take over from Morne Winnaar.
