Six die in Kenya crash
NAIROBI: Kenya’s internal security minister was killed with five other people when the police helicopter they were travelling in crashed in a forest near the capital city, officials said.
An anti-corruption crusader said the incident calls into question the government’s procurement of airplanes and helicopters for its security forces.
Internal Security Minister George Saitoti and his deputy, Orwa Ojode, were among the six killed in yesterday’s crash, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka said. It was not clear what caused the accident.
Anti-corruption crusader Mwalimu Mati said Saitoti would leave a controversial legacy. He said Saitoti would be remembered for his role in a financial scandal that almost destroyed Kenya’s economy. – Sapa-AP PARIS: French President Francois Hollande is on track to win a solid parliamentary majority after a first-round election that leaves him strengthened heading into a flurry of talks with euro zone leaders that could make or break the currency union.
Yesterday’s vote left Hollande’s Socialist Party bloc likely to win the 289 seats it needs for an outright majority in the 577-seat National Assembly, and almost certain to do so with its Greens Party allies on board.
Socialists were muted in their reaction, anxious to keep the pressure on supporters to vote in next Sunday’s run-off. – Reuters
