Egypt beat Guinea, Libya stun Cameroon

LIBYA stunned four-time African champions Cameroon in World Cup qualifying yesterday, while Egypt’s revival under American Bob Bradley continued with a dramatic win in Guinea.

Ethiopia beat Central African Republic to go top of Group A and Tanzania saw off Gambia in Group C to move within a point of leaders Ivory Coast.

Congo overcame Togo 2-0 to send the Togolese to the bottom of Group I and leave them with a mountain to climb after the second of six rounds of group games in Africa’s main qualifying competitio­n for Brazil 2014.

Hamad Ahniash scored in the third minute of stoppage time in neutral Sfax, in Tunisia, to give the Libyans a 2-1 win over Cameroon and put them top of Group I.

Ahmed Zouay put the Libyans ahead in the eighth minute in a game closed to fans in eastern Tunisia. Striker Eric Choupo-Moting netted for the second straight game to draw Cameroon level, but Ahniash popped up three minutes into added time for a famous win for the Libyans.

Bradley’s Egypt claimed a 3-2 victory in Conakry with Mohamed Salah’s winner in the fifth minute of added time to continue the Pharaohs’ unbeaten run this year under the former United States coach.

Egypt, who haven’t qualified for the World Cup since 1990, went three points clear at the top of Group G.

Said Saladin scored twice for Ethiopia, who also held South Africa to an away draw on the opening weekend, in a 2-0 win over Central African Republic in Addis Ababa, pushing the Ethiopians to the top of the group.

Tanzania kept within sight of top-ranked African team Ivory Coast in Group C with second-half goals by Shomari Kapombe and Erasto Nyoni in Dar es Salaam, after Gambia had taken a seventh-minute lead.

Tresor Mputu’s opener in the 23rd minute sent Congo to victory over Togo.

Liberia vs Angola, Lesotho vs Sudan and Mozambique vs Zimbabwe all ended in 0-0 draws.

Elsewhere, Tunisia lead Group B from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast are in control of Group C despite being held 2-2 in Morocco on Saturday and Ghana now trail Sudan in Group D after losing away to Zambia. – Sapa-AP
