There’s no stopping David and Kylan
AN ERRONEOUS entry to the Daily News Win a Wedding competition did not deter a Pinetown couple from pursuing their dream wedding.
Kylan Oliver had initially entered the competition after hearing about it on the radio.
“My future mother-in-law bought the paper, we filled out the entry form and entered the competition,” said Oliver.
However, after discovering that there was a problem with her first entry, the 26-year-old re-entered the competition – determined to wed her high school sweetheart, David Zima, in the Midlands, which holds fond memories for the pair.
“We frequently holiday at the Berg because we prefer its peace and quiet; it’s a spiritual place for us.
“We have spent most of our anniversaries at the Berg. It would be perfect to mark another milestone in our relationship there,” said the qualified lawyer, who is serving her articles.
A chatty and outgoing Oliver said her draughtsman boyfriend’s reserved personality balanced their relationship.
“Our relationship is a case of opposites attract and it works well for us,” she said.
Zima met his future wife at primary school and while they parted ways to attend different high schools, he never forgot his childhood crush. He didn’t realise that sifting through the contacts on a friend’s phone years later would give him an opportunity to reconnect with her.
“I saw her name on his phone and I asked him if this was the same Kylan from Sarnia, and when he said yes, I asked him if I could take the number and he told me I could,” Zima said.
One phone call later the Grade 11 pupils went on the first of many dates and nine years down the line Oliver says they would have probably already been married had it not been for financial constraints.
“Marriage has come up many times, but we know that we are not in a position to get married and we want to do it the right way,” she said.
The couple live with Zima’s parents and are saving up to move into their own home.
Zima said that while they were starting out and didn’t have the means to achieve their dreams yet, he wanted to give his future wife her dream wedding.
“Kylan’s been dreaming of a big, perfect wedding all her life and I just want her to have that,” he said.
“I want to make her the happiest person on our wedding day – that’s why winning this competition would mean everything to us.” THE University of KwaZuluNatal has been rated as the top SA university in the field of mathematics research by business data provider Thomson Reuters.
