Frost’s guitar set to heat up local stages
T’S OFFICIAL. Renowned blues and rock guitarist Albert Frost’s ( pictured) first solo performance in Durban is set to take place this weekend at Mojos, Riverside Hotel, the VMACS Roadhouse in Pinetown and Rock Bottom Pub and Grill. Moreover, Frost will perform throughout the country next month with gigs in Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth.
Often termed one of SA’s most accomplished guitarists, Frost began playing at the age of 13 and soon after joined the Blues Broers band alongside his father.
When Tonight interviewed Frost, he described his music as modern blues. In terms of his first solo performance in Durban, he said: “I am thrilled to be performing in Durban, a little nervous as always, but that keeps
Ime on my toes. The performance showcases various styles on acoustic and electric guitars, with a little background on the songs. Some covers, some original songs – couple of laughs, too.” The star is working on his new album, scheduled for release later this year. Asked about the biggest challenge he has faced as an artist, Frost said: “It is a challenge to remain optimistic, and constantly push the boundaries of my show and musicianship to remain fresh, interesting and interested.”
For Frost, his dream gig would have to be at the Royal Albert Hall with Eric Clapton.
“It is such an iconic music venue – with my name on it. And Eric Clapton had a huge influence on me when I was growing up.”
Giving some wisdom and encouragement to aspiring artists, Frost said, with a laugh: “My initial reaction for aspiring artists? Don’t do it.
“But seriously, you have to be realistic and know that it is hard work, like any job.
“Although music has a very personal and private side, generally music is very social. And I think respect for others lies at the heart of all social interaction. You have to respect others – as a musician, you have to respect your audience. But all people deserve and respond very well to respect.”
Frost has plenty more in store for his fans, with a new album on its way and some music videos set to release this year.
He also has those upcoming performances in Joburg and Bloemfontein: “I’d love to travel more – starting with Durban – so I will be back here regularly. I also plan to become involved in production work.”
