Feast for food lovers
THE Flavours of Durban Winter Food Festival will take place at three venues – uShaka Marine World, North Beach Amphitheatre (an initiative headed by Southern Sun Elangeni) and Suncoast – on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6pm daily.
The idea is to taste a variety of speciality delights by visiting each of the participating nodes at which chefs, culinary experts and speciality foodies will be preparing a variety of delicious Durban dishes.
Each node will offer alfresco dining experiences, on-site entertainment, live music and an opportunity to soak up the warm winter weather.
Suncoast’s speciality dish will be variations on a surf and turf barbecue, including fish and chips, prawns, steaks, prego rolls. There will also be an oyster bar on site – adding exotic sophistication – and a beach bar for lazy sundowners with a beverage station for soft drinks.
The Amphitheatre on North Beach will become an extension of Southern Sun Elangeni, in association with South African Chefs Association KZN (SACAKZN) and various partners.
Chefs from Elangeni will prepare BBQ basted beach beef, chicken and veggie burgers. Other meals at the amphitheatre include aromatic chicken tikka masala and traditional lamb breyani with spicy dhal prepared by Jewel of India; sushi and fish and chips from John Dory’s and a selection of seasonal light meals from Circus Circus.
The beach bar area will have entertainment.
Some of the province’s top chefs will be braaing Checkers Championship Boerewors in aid to raise funds for the Billy Gallagher Assistant Study Fund – a development project of the SACAKZN which empowers and educates emerging chefs.
The third node of Flavours of Durban is uShaka Marine World, with many of their eateries such as Wahooz, Upper Deck, Cargo Hold, Ocean Basket, Caffe Java and Curry Leaf participating.
Entry to all entertainment nodes is free, with food and drink – including vegetarian options – on sale.
