We also need extra police, says reader

Crime

Crime in white-dominated area, police commissioner sends extra cops. What about us, the majority law-abiding, black citizens? We have violent crimes hourly, but no extra cops. Wake up, guys. Black lives are still cheap in SA. MS.

Bryce Moon fined R60 000. Who will benefit from the fine? What about the family of the victims? What benefit will the family receive from the R60 000? Cas D.

Fifteen-year-old schoolgirl appears in court over unlicensed gun (Daily News, April 19). Upon investigation it was found that this dangerous weapon was pawned. The rightful owner acted in an irresponsible manner and I wonder how many more have done this. It would be better if the police visited every licensed gun holder to ensure that these weapons are still in good hands. By the way, what has happened to those guns whose owners have not renewed and those whose owners have passed away? They may also end up in the wrong hands and should be confiscated by the police. Concerned parent.

“Hi Jack”: lose the race card. Plenty of black families live in the Highway area. Start a neighbourhood watch in your area. P West.

Top jobs

Indians have been competing with and even dominating whites in academics for the last 30 years at least. Why, then, do we not see many Indians at board level of large corporates? Well qualified Indians are still stuck in senior manager roles and are not good enough for the board. Are boards chosen on skin colour or competence?

White men have top jobs. Well yes, they all started work at the bottom of the ladder and on experience got promoted. This takes years. Since ’94 black men get CEO jobs because of affirmative action and not because of experience.

Roads/driving

New toll road: No! Someone is making mega bucks on this. Why don’t those responsible maintain the old roads so people can travel to Johannesburg cheaper? Krish, Phoenix.

How many young drivers have wiped out innocent lives by impatiently overtaking like mad maniacs? Dada-Adam.

M19 Umgeni Rd N2. To Raymond Harriparsad: you are right – the construction will not be completed on due date. According to our bet, if completed on due date you will shave your head half bald. I have lost the bet so I’m prepared to shave my head half bald because the contractor has been awarded extension of time. Bharath Harisunker.

Luis Suarez

Being a Liverpool fan, I am left totally disgusted at the behaviour of Luiz Suarez. Biting an opponent has no place in a game of football. He may be a good player, but I feel that he is a disgrace to the Liverpool colours. Liverpool’s image will be tarnished if the team management do not take action to rectify his behaviour. I simply hate cheating in any sports. Prem.

The good: creating an assist for Liverpool’s first goal and scoring one himself. The bad: handling the ball in his own box, thereby giving a penalty. The ugly: biting an opponent in a game of football. This is Luis Suarez of the great team Liverpool. What a talented player who has not repented for his past misdemeanours. Can Liverpool afford to keep him, not knowing what harm he might cause to Liverpool’s great image worldwide? Disgusted Liverpool fan.

Education

Teachers who are affiliated to Sadtu are supposedly on a “go slow”, but at my children’s school in Clairwood, the teachers are not teaching them at all. Some teachers are even telling the pupils to stay at home.

There is no difference in SA schools if Sadtu members are on strike or not. Their attendance and performance during a strike period equals attendance and performance under normal conditions. RB.

9 000 teachers away from schools in past three years in Eastern Cape, but continue receiving salaries. Chronic absenteeism is not restricted to this province. In KZN, late arrivals, early departures and bunking is the norm at many schools. Even worse, leave forms are not submitted.

Zim loan

To JZ and company: it is good to help your neighbours, but not at the expense of millions of hungry people in SA. Added to this are the millions who have no adequate shelter over their heads. Mugabe destroyed Zimbabwe. By supporting a rogue president who raped his own country’s wealth, you are doing the same thing right here in SA.

The ANC is calling the Zim loan a “loan” just to placate us SA taxpayers. Giving even a cent to the morally and financially bankrupt Zim government is a shameful sin. I really hope God punishes every person that is responsible for this “loan”. Nobody can expect repayment from a bankrupt state. Apply the NCA lending criteria and Mad Bob will be thrown out.

Rush to implement e-tolling to finance Zim elections, methinks. I’ve heard that some of our high-ranking political leaders, and I don’t know who else, have extensive mining interests in Zim mines, hence the quiet diplomacy. Nad G.

Odds and ends

Ads on SABC channels are not representative of all race groups, why?

Any bets that the Sharks won’t finish in the top three of their conference? Boring, boring rugby. Player24.

Is it true our “elite soldiers” were killed by “laaities” in uniform? Yackoob.

If the pictures from Syria (for example in this weekend’s Sunday Tribune) don’t cause heartache, pain and make tears well up our eyes, then we as the human race have lost it. All I know is that we have to act now, but I don’t know how. Loss of innocent lives is unacceptable. Lulu N.

Is R10 the official charge for umbrella storage in a wheelie bin at Moses Mabhida, or is security on the take? McQuire NJ.

Sam: you must be some highly paid government official to stay in Durban North.

Question: how many of our councillors have matric, let alone a degree?

Why did Stefan Terblanche not get the Natal admin job as John Smit is certainly not suited for it.

Millions of people play Lotto every week: why not have R1 million a week to be won? It will help. Marie.

Sassa: I also know of registered pensioners receiving “have not reregistered” letters – why? Sassa implemented this system. Our pensioners rely on this money. Why are they subjected to this incompetence?

The Boston bombers were framed in a plot by the CIA, FBI and Hollywood. The CIA is the US think tank and money-making machine. Wait for divine justice. Msa of Rsa.
