RTI fitness test deaths inquiry to start

- SHERLISSA PETERS

THE commission of inquiry into the deaths of eight aspirant Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers at Pietermaritzburg’s Harry Gwala Stadium will begin next week.

It will investigate the handling, in December, of the RTI’s selection process, and report on whether statutory requirements were adhered to and if negligence by any officials contributed to deaths or injuries, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize confirmed yesterday.

The inquiry may recommend disciplinary action or criminal prosecution.

Mkhize made the announcement in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, where the inquiry will be held, and named the members of the commission.

They are: advocate Thandi Norman (chairwoman), Reverend Rubin Phillip (commissioner), advocate Thandanani Mthembu (commissioner), Sithembiso Kunene (evidence leader) and Bongekile Zulu (in- vestigator). Dumisane Xaba has been designated secretary.

Scores of people were admitted to hospital after taking part in a gruelling fitness test which formed part of the inspectorate’s selection process for 90 posts.

Seven allegedly died from dehydration and heatstroke, while the eighth was reported to have allegedly committed suicide after failing to pass the fitness test.

An estimated 34 000 applicants for were told to run 4km in sweltering Pietermaritzburg heat. To qualify, men had to complete the run in less than 25 minutes. Women had 30 minutes.

Sittings are to begin at the Royal Show Grounds, Hall 6, at 9am on April 29. The commission has five months to submit its final report.

Anyone who has information for the commission, or who wishes to give evidence, can contact the commission at 191 Peter Kerchoff Street, Room 5, or at 033 341 7127.
