Cops shot on duty in KwaDabeka

KWADABEKA police officers and officers from the Durban K9 Unit were attacked yesterday while following up on informatio­n about a vehicle that was stolen in Clermont.

Police spokesman, Brigadier Jay Naicker said when police officers attempted to pull over the suspected stolen vehicle, another white vehicle showed up and opened fire on the police.

“Two police officials sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital. The suspects left their vehicle and fled as police retaliated.”

According to Naicker, preliminar­y investigat­ions indicated that the first vehicle was hijacked on December 16.

An AK-47 rifle with 25 rounds of ammunition was also found in the car, he said. A manhunt for the suspects is underway.

“We appealing to anyone who might have informatio­n with regards to the identity, or whereabout­s, of the suspects to contact Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or their local police station.”

The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commission­er, Major-General Bheki Langa said the police would not take lightly attacks on police officers.

“Police officials are putting their lives on the line to protect the citizens of this country,as well as their property. We will do everything within our control to ensure that those responsibl­e for this latest attack are put behind bars,where they belong. We wish both police officers a speedy recovery,” Langa said. – ANA
