THE INEFFECTIVE foreign policies, disastrous interventions and hypocrisy of some Western leaders and the UN Security Council have led to a bloodbath in Syria.

Some analysts have correctly labelled the atrocities being carried out by autocrat and tyrant Bashar al-Assad a “holocaust”.

It is so sad that daily we see and read about the brutal atrocities being committed by the ruthless regime of Assad flashed across news channels and we are somewhat silent about it.

Due to geo-strategic and economic interests in Syria, the Syrian people have become victims of a bloody proxy war between the permanent members of the Security Council due to their interests in Syria.

It seems we have learnt nothing from the destruction, suffering and pain of World Wars I and II, Darfur, Bosnia, Rwanda, to name a few.

In Syria, people are paying daily with their lives for this terrible war which they have nothing to do with.

This is not about territory or who is right or wrong.

This is about human beings, human rights, rule of law and justice.

It’s time to move beyond talks and conferences to find a life of dignity for Syrians caught in this brutal war which has displaced, killed and harmed hundreds of thousands of the most vulnerable human beings in over five years of ruthless fighting.

If we remain silent, this sin being committed in Syria will definitely stain our conscience decades later and haunt us. MOHAMED SAEED
