Public outcry after dead dog is found in rubbish bag

- ZAINUL DAWOOD

A BLACK bin bag sealed with adhesive tape and the smell of rotting flesh emanating from it was thought to contain a human body.

Instead it was a dog, that could have been someone’s pet. Prem Balram of private security company Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) said they were called out to investigate the suspicious packet on the pavement at Marshall Drive in Mount Edgecombe.

Balram said it could not be established how long the dog was lying there or who the owner was. The Durban and Coastal SPCA spokeswoman Lindsey Conce said the find was not reported to them.

“Owners should ideally take their animals to a vet or local SPCA and pay to have them cremated,” she said.

Balram said the dog was removed by Durban Solid Waste.

On Rusa’s Facebook page, people reacted to the news with disgust: Vasilis Karvelas posted: “They couldn’t even bury the dog, what miserable people they must be.”

Pam Naicker said: “Such cruel people how heartless you are to put a dead dog in a bin bag, when you die you must also be put in a bin bag and thrown in the bush.”

LoveSher Banu Khan said: “Sad, cruel, heartless world we live in.

“If some monsters can do this to human beings then doing this to an animal is nothing to them!

Daniel Levi Baijnath said: “Just yesterday I witnessed a dog tied to a street light pole in the blistering heat. Today a dead dog in a rubbish bag. What’s next?”.
