Unpacking Valentine’s for singles

- MAKABELO KB MOTAUNG

OKAY, so I know the Valentine’s week can be really hard on anyone who’s not in a loving relationship. Even though intellectually I’m sure you think it’s a commercialised sales day, but emotionally it’s still a reminder of missing out on love.

So let’s unpack this day for you single brothers and sisters out there.

As it stands, women believe in this day more than men do. Most women believe this is the occasion to show your appreciation for your better half, while most men believe the same but also that this is an occasion to get laid.

Without even sugar-coating this, it seems that both sexes see this as some type of way to pursue selfish motives, men motivated by sex and women the chance to be pampered. But then again, the topic is for singles. I thought it was interesting to note that, so you singles are not missing out on much, and who cares about those coupled-up people with selfish Valentine’s Day motives, right?

Let’s unpack this even further. According to the Chillsauce survey, 69% of single men will be spending this day alone, versus the 32% of single women who will be spending this day alone.

While this could have been a perfect day for singles to get together, it seems men and women are not on the same page.

Ladies, I’m sorry to say this, but Valentine’s Day is the worst day to go men-hunting, not because the men are paired up and out and about with their partners but because these singles will be spending the day alone. Doing what, you might ask?

The survey revealed this as well, in this order: Watching TV Watching porn Playing TV games I know most women will be spending the day with their friends, but those of you spending the day alone have more chances of picking up a guy who’s at home than one who’s out and about.

Take advantage of this, as there are more single guys alone, at home, than ladies on this day. So invite a single guy over or offer to cook at his place. Or even better, it’s a perfect opportunity for an adult sleep-over.

Those of you gents going out have more fish to catch. The majority of guys are spending time alone while the majority of ladies will be out with friends. You can’t be spoilt for choice more than that.

And to the lasses going out, there will be more of you and fewer of them, so be smart. Don’t go to the bathroom in numbers while you’re out.

wTrust me, it will work in you favour if you go to the bathroom alone, plus this creates a perfect opportunity for a guy to approach you. Men are scared of crowds because they fear rejection.

My tip to all the singles out there is: try something new, make the day fun for you and your friends. Go try speed dating or invite other singles and have one great party! Who knows… Cupid might be on your side.
