Eskom accused of shredding Molefe evidence

- SIYABONGA MKHWANAZI

ESKOM and the DA are involved in a spat after the official opposition accused the power utility of shredding documents relating to Brian Molefe’s re-appointment to Eskom.

The DA’s Natasha Mazzone said yesterday that Eskom was destroying key documents linked to Molefe. But this was denied by Eskom.

Eskom was appearing before Parliament’s Standing Com- mittee on Public Accounts to explain its coal contracts.

During its appearance before the portfolio committee on public enterprises this week, MPs grilled it on the re-appointment of Molefe.

The committee demanded answers from Eskom, and said because of a lack of clarity on some of the issues, a full-scale inquiry was needed.

The committee will draw up the terms of reference and has given Eskom 14 days to submit more documents on Molefe’s re-appointment.

MPs want the inquiry to begin as soon as Eskom has submitted the required documents.

Mazzone said she had heard from a good authority that Eskom was destroying documents on Molefe’s re-appointment. She asked Eskom to come clean on the destruction of the documents. She said they would not allow Eskom to destroy the documents.

But Eskom company secretary Suzanne Daniels denied the accusation.

She said they were not aware of this information circulated by the DA.

“We are not aware of the incident alluded to by the DA. To the extent that Ms Mazzone has sent out a statement on the matter, we hope she has reported the alleged serious criminal activity to the police,” Daniels said.

The portfolio committee on public enterprises said it wanted to start with its inquiry into Eskom as soon as possible.
