THE family of murdered 10-year-old Miguel Louw said the man accused of his kidnapping received a rude awakening when he was arrested yesterday for the boy’s murder.

They rejoiced outside Durban Magistrate’s Court soon after Mohammed Ebrahim’s arrest.

Ebrahim, who was on R2 500 bail, had made a brief court appearance on a kidnapping charge.

Before Ebrahim’s court appearance, police from the Provincial Organised Crime unit had taken him to his home in Phoenix where they searched for a cellphone he had been using to allegedly send the Louw family threatening messages.

Police had found the phone on Ebrahim’s father, who was seated in court, and confiscated it.

In the dock, Ebrahim continuously shook his head and said he was innocent, but Magistrate Samuel Luthuli told him to speak to his attorney, Chris Gounden, if he had any issues.

Prosecutor Kuveshni Pillay told the court that the kidnapping and murder charges would be joined at Ebrahim’s next appearance next Wednesday. She also said from there Ebrahim could be indicted to appear in the Durban High Court.

Ebrahim was remanded to Westville Prison, a decision he was unhappy with. He kept saying “This is not right” and “They must prove it” while being led to the court cells.

Miguel went missing in July after leaving school. On the day of his disappearance, video footage from a KFC outlet on Dr RD Naidu Drive, Sydenham, showed Ebrahim with Miguel.

In September, Miguel’s decomposed body was found in bushes along Longbury Drive, not far from Ebrahim’s home.

Yesterday, Arlene Paul, Miguel’s grandmother, said they would finally get the closure they deserved and was ecstatic that the case was moving forward.
