- MINENHLE MKHIZE minenhle.mkhize@inl.co.za

Others felt that the award should have been given to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Oh no! Guys.

Come on. The duo has been great over the year and no one can dispute that. The statistics and facts are there for everyone to see.

They have dominated the world’s biggest gong for the past 10 years. They always say consistency is a sign of a champion.

The duo has been amazing over the years. Even the word amazing is under rated. They have been flawless over the past 10 years. I know that they have a huge following across the world but we must also celebrate Modric for his achievement. He has earned it.

The Croatian midfield kingpin was colossal for his country as they reached the final in the World Cup in Russia this year.

The midfield maestro walked away with the player of the tournament award.

No one ever predicted that Croatia would go as far as reaching the World Cup final but Modric was key to that success. He was the messiah and the saviour for Croatia. Modric is a different player to Ronaldo and Messi.

They might been playing in the same generation but they boasts different capabilities. CR7 and Leo are born poachers. Modric is the maestro.

He makes things happen in the middle of the park with his ability to read the game with aplomb and his genius of passing the ball with ease.

He is the mould of Zinedine Zidane.

Modric create chances, dictate terms in the middle of the park and make the likes of Ronaldo look good.

He has enjoyed a very successful 2018. Uefa Champions League is currently the best continental club’s competition globally. Real Madrid won it three times on the trot.

Ronaldo popped up with some important strikes but Modric was pivotal at the heart of midfield for Madrid.

He was marshalling that midfield. Let us allow Modric to celebrate his gong in peace.

His achievement is not by mistake. Ronaldo and Messi didn’t have the best World Cup.

They were both sent packing in the last 16 of the biggest showpiece on earth while Modric reached the final.

Even Ronaldo shouldn’t have made it in to the top three.

Kylian Mbappe should have been ahead of king CR7.

The French starlet had the best World Cup and great season with PSG.

He won the treble and the biggest showpiece in the world. At the tender age of 19, that was remarkable.

The only biggest achievement that eluded him was the Uefa Champions League which Ronaldo won.

But apart from that, Mbappe had a better year than the Portuguese goal machine. So, it should have been Modric, Mbappe and Antonio Griezman.

Once again, congratulations to Modric. You really deserve your crown.
