Durban can learn a thing or two from Richards Bay

POLITICS

The intelligentsia in the EFF have not given sufficient thought to some of its proposals. To change the National Prosecuting Authority into a Chapter 9 institution, so as to be accountable to Parliament, would not ensure the NPA’s independence since the majority party always calls the shots and would be able to dictate to the NPA. The fact that only our courts may review the decisions of the NPA protects citizens – and more especially minority parties – from the abuse of power or corrupt agenda of members of a majority party in Parliament.

I agree with you, Malema, Batohi is not the right person for the job... She and the SAPS have still not prosecuted you for discharging a firearm in public. Different strokes for different folks.

Cosatu and its affiliates must up their game and transform to remain relevant. They are threatening national strikes if state entities retrench staff. Had they been proactive and understood staffing norms and ratios, entities – and even government departments – would not have been overstaffed. Cosatu continues to call for more jobs in these sectors while some employees just don’t have enough work to keep them occupied for eight hours.

With regards to all the corruption that occurred mainly in the last decade, which is being exposed on a daily basis, it is of high concern that no action is being taken by law enforcement agencies like the NPA. Surely action could be taken regarding the allegations even before the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture comes to a conclusion by next year. Why the delay? If no urgent action is taken, then our country is heading for a real disaster. That will be a very sad day, indeed.

ANC deploys its key people to strategic positions like chief executive, finance, HR and legal in government and SOEs. They capture these positions to manipulate contracts and appointments without resistance. There is nothing anyone can do in these situations except vote for a change in government.

All these commissions are an absolute waste of time and money. The rest of the free world have taken note as no prosecution of those implicated for wrongdoing has taken place. Therefore do not expect to see investments and extra jobs created for the unemployed in the RSA. Investment is the only way to create jobs. So the RSA will unfortunately continue to suffer due to corruption, theft and fraud until such time as these perpetrators are thrown in jail. It is ludicrous to expect existing and new investors to invest in a country effectively run by crooks where there are no consequences. | CB

ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY

The eThekwini Municipality, is more concerned about the conditions of employment for senior managers than millions of rand in wasteful expenditure. Is that not financial mismanagement? Punishable by various criminal laws? | JT

It is illegal and improper to park one’s vehicle in front of someone’s driveway. However, this is exactly what’s happening in Unit 9, Chatsworth. The metro police must put an immediate end to this blatant abuse of the Road Traffic Ordinance which can spiral out of control in Chatsworth. | Law Abiding Citizen.

Just been to Richards Bay. What a beautiful, clean town. Well done to the city of uMhlathuze for maintaining their roads and keeping their streets clean. Their beaches are also neat and tidy. Maybe eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and her team can learn from their colleagues up north.

ODDS AND ENDS

Which bright spark arranged the school holidays this year, where the “Easter” holidays are nowhere near the Easter weekend when the kids will be back in school? | DJ

The Driefontein disaster and many others past and in the future are as a result of an ideology that maintenance is un-African. | Errol

Can someone from the Education Department explain to me why the school days have suddenly increased for schools in the Malvern area? Primary school Grade 3 to 7 used to finish at 1.40pm but now finish any time from 2.10pm to 2.30pm. Where’s the time for kids to be kids?
