Reckless blue light convoys an abuse of resources

POLITICS

Political solutions sought after hours by Cosatu union leaders and politicians leads to fraud, corruption and maladministration. This happens all the time and every rule and regulation is then broken. Honest civil servants just look on. The ANC chairperson Sihle Zikalala must not lie to us about consequence management. There is nothing like that for cadres and comrades.

Malema said they must give whites the jobs that blacks used to do. Please employ me, Mr Malema. I need a job.

We got freedom in 1994, but we lost discipline. What a shame that parents started letting the children run wild – what a disgrace.

Why does the government keep importing chicken when our chicken farmers are having to retrench thousands of workers because they can’t compete with cheap imports?

ODDS AND ENDS

Mr F Mkhize, your letter to the Daily News regarding Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo is spot on. How does this man still hold his position? Obviously only because he is connected to the right people in the ANC. | Graham Rice

This is to the MEC of Transport. What would you do if one of your children was killed by a moron speeding through a red light? I reported to you about two years ago the big trucks speeding down Van Reenen’s Pass with vehicle details and phone numbers. What did you do? Do something about this driver behaviour. Condolences to the families. RIP. | D Johnston

Thank you, Daily News. At last the verges have been cleaned up on the M4 at Sibaya. Now we wait for the balance towards Durban. Bet the contractors have been paid for the job.

The “points demerits” system for delinquent drivers cannot curb road carnage effectively while we only have a fraction of the traffic police we need – 22000 instead of 120000. So when will President Cyril Ramaphosa end the critical shortage of traffic police? | Richard Benson, Road Safety Action Campaign, Cape Town

Only an uneducated person throws bottles out of a car on to the street. I am an avid cyclist and I see the relentless disposal of broken glass bottles on the side of the road. The people who throw these bottles out of car windows should be arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, as you pose a risk to other members of society. Also, those who throw litter out the car windows are pathetic examples of human society that pollute our environment. | Marcel

On March 4, the whole of Doonside in Toti had no water. I traced the leak to our township, Felekisi. The water board staff were there awaiting instructions because there was a house built on top of the leaking water pipe. Who in the department is not doing their job? How many more houses are built over water pipes? | buzz

Drivers, please refrain from texting while driving. People’s lives are at stake because of this.

Calvin Richard van Schalkwyk, you have my support, as well as that of hundreds of others with regard to the new Telkom phones. We have been conned into accepting them and we all want our old phones back. An investigation has to be done. | LEE

In my time of trauma, I thank Captain Ndlovu and the staff at Durban North police station for friendly and efficient assistance.

What happened to ubuntu in our country? | Mervyn Appadu

There is no need for SAPS and metro police to drive so fast and dangerously. I was on my way back from Pietermaritzburg last week when this lot almost pushed me off the road because some councillor or politician was probably in a hurry to get home. They drove so recklessly, only to be stopped at the Toll anyway. Is there a need to put on a blue light convoy show with so many metro policemen in convoy? An absolute abuse of resources.
