LEBO Maboe has been one of the most consistent performers for Mamelodi Sundowns and his desire to break into the Bafana Bafana set-up has been the secret behind his strong displays.

Maboe has featured in 22 league games for Sundowns this season. He joined the club from Maritzburg United at the start of the season.

Maboe, pictured, has contributed with eight strikes and three assists in his 22 league appearances.

The skilful midfielder is Sundowns’ top goalscorer in the league. He is also second on the list of players with most goals in the league. He trails Mwape Musonda of Black Leopards by four goals.

It came as no surprise when he was announced in Bafana’s squad to face Libya next week away from home in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Maboe expressed his delight at receiving the Bafana call-up.

“I’m very excited, especially knowing that it is one game that we need to get a point in. I’m sure we will get there, to get a point,” Maboe said.

Maboe will be competing against the likes of Thulani Serero and Thembinkosi Lorch for the starting berth in the national team.

Bafana need one point to book a place in Africa’s biggest showpiece in Egypt.

“Getting to the national team, it is something that I’ve been working towards achieving. I’m glad and proud that finally I’ve broken through into the national team and looking forward to contribute if I get a chance,” Maboe explained.

Bafana shared the spoils with Libya in the first round at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in a 0-0 stalemate. Libya can still qualify for Afcon if they defeat Bafana. Nigeria have already secured a ticket to Egypt in June. The battle for the second spot is between Bafana and Libya. Bafana are second with nine points while Libya are on seven points.
