Reds want another trophy

-

JUERGEN Klopp finally has a reason to pay attention to the Uefa Super Cup.

Klopp and Liverpool face Chelsea in an all-English meeting of the reigning Champions League and Europa League winners in Istanbul tomorrow.

Klopp missed out on the Super Cup three times in the past by losing Champions League finals with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, as well as a Europa League final with the Reds.

That changed last season when Liverpool beat Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to lift the European Cup for the sixth time.

“The Super Cup in my history is not a cup I really loved to watch in the past because I was so often in either final,” Klopp said.

“The Super Cup is final proof you are not in the game so it means you didn’t win the final. It’s completely different this year.”

It’s the first Super Cup to feature two English teams, a match-up that was guaranteed with Arsenal also reaching the Europa League final and losing to Chelsea 4-1.

Both sides kicked off their league seasons at the weekend with different results.

Liverpool eased to a 4-1 win over promoted Norwich City while Chelsea were hammered at Manchester United 4-0 in Frank Lampard’s first game as manager.

“We will bounce back from this,” Lampard said afterwards.

“We certainly don’t want to lose anywhere 4-0, and it hurts.”

Liverpool has already missed out on one trophy this season, losing a penalty shoot-out to Manchester City in the Community Shield.

And while many consider both matches to be glorified friendlies, Liverpool’s James Milner feels winning them puts you in the right mindset.

“I think it’s very important, you want to get in that habit of winning trophies,” he said.

“The Super Cup is a special trophy to win because you have to win a big trophy to get their.

“It’s a good way to start the season if you can win a trophy and it’s more silverware for the club if you can do it.”
