THE Kloof and Highway SPCA has seen an increase in “unwanted” animals due to the financial effects that the national lockdown has had on the ability of owners to take care of their pets, says the facility’s manager, Barbara Patrick.

She was responding to questions from the Daily News after the Lower South Coast SPCA said it had brought in many starving and sick animals.

“We are thankful for their dedication to rescue animals from a life of misery, neglect, hunger and pain. In many instances, the lockdown was used as an excuse not to seek medical help for their animals,” she said.

Yesterday Patrick said the national lockdown had been devastating for owners unable to feed their pets.

“Kloof and Highway SPCA are helping responsible pet owners with food. We also sterilise pets and try to ensure they keep fewer animals. All inspectors travel with food bags in their vehicles to help feed pets,” she said.
