Motshekga behind all the confusion

- M PERUMAL | Durban

I KNOW Angie Motshekga is not alone in making the decisions concerning children returning to school but, as the basic education minister, the buck stops with her.

She must take responsibility for the confusion created around the issue.

Time after time we have been told that schools will be ready to receive children, only for the teachers’ unions and parents’ associations to show otherwise.

After all the to-ing and fro-ing and postponements, I have little faith or reason to believe in Motshekga, who does not inspire confidence during her televised addresses.

The contrast between what she and her department say, and what the unions counter with is too stark to ignore – all schools will be ready to receive children versus it will take a miracle to prepare all schools in time.

This leaves parents with a dilemma. Do we believe the incompetent minister, or the unions who, admittedly, will look for any excuse for their members not to work?
