Residents urged to be more vigilant

- WINSTON MFEKA

HOMEOWNERS in Phoenix have been advised to be more vigilant as there is a great risk of home invasions and house robberies, according to Phoenix Community Police Forum chairperson Umesh Singh, after a 63- year- old woman and her family were held at gunpoint while suspects took items from their home on Tuesday night.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, the robbers entered the Stonybrook Place home by forcing the kitchen door open.

The family was robbed of three cellphones, two TV sets and a vehicle, in which the robbers drove away.

A case of robbery was opened at Phoenix Police Station for further investigation.

Singh called for residents to be vigilant. “We have seen a number of cases of house robberies and home invasions happening sporadically around Phoenix, and often suspects have taken advantage of people letting down their guard.

“It is important for people to be more aware of their surroundings at all times and, if you notice suspicious activity in the neighbourhood, please report it to the police.”

Ward councillor Maggie Johnson called for greater police visibility to curb crime in Phoenix.

“With the lack of visible policing, criminals have been given carte blanche and it feels like Phoenix is under siege, with crime reported on a regular basis. There has been an increase, including petty crime.”

Johnson said the best way to combat crime is by fostering relationships between the public and police, but they are yet to engage in meetings with the SAPS to address the escalating crime in the area.

“We are making arrangements with the commissioner for the area to discuss a way forward,” she said.
