Getting HOOKED Summer fish are out in force

-

AS we move deeper into the 10th month of the year the summer heat is starting to make its presence known. The fishing has been great on most fronts when the sea has allowed it.

The offshore fishing is starting to heat up with the weather. The tuna are still in full force ( much like the sea) but a handful of dorado and sailfish have already been spotted or landed so get ready for the summer fish.

Richards Bay is starting to see the summer fish a lot more than we are in Durban. The areas of change of depth and water temperature are the spots to focus your efforts. The skirted lures trolled in a spread of four or more will quickly get the attention of any game fish in the area. For the spread, look at trolling the lures at different lengths behind your boat. For example: in a five rod spread you can run the inner two rods just behind the prop wash, the outer rods around 30 meters back and a “Hong Kong” rod 100 meters or more behind.

The Durban coast has been a bit bumpy with the sea choosing to beat the boats up a bit. The hardened sea dogs that have gone out have struggled for a bite but the bites have been big. The tuna are still around and will jump on to most lures or baits. The dorado have started to make an appearance so look out for floating debris and troll past it slowly. The snoek are still present at most of the river mouths so spend the early mornings behind Blue Lagoon or the likes and look for a snoek while you have your coffee.

The south coast has been quiet with their reports. The Aliwal Shoal anglers have reported dorado and sailfish on the shoal but the season is still a bit early down south to actively target them. The wahoo have been stripping reels for anyone brave enough to drop a live bonnie over the side. The bottom fishing anglers have been doing very well with multiple species. Slinger, cracker, Scotsman and rockcod have been the main reported catches.

The shore angling has started to see a lot more summer fish in the catches. The shad are still full up but please remember the season is closed!
