Concert goers urged to get jabs
LEGENDARY artists took to the stage at the first Izingqalabutho Maskandi Concert which kicked off on a high note at the Playhouse in Durban.
The event was a tribute to two maskandi icons, Thwalofu Namankentshane and the late David Ngcobo. Among the legends who performed their hit songs was Phuzekhemisi, Madala Kunene, Nkunzemdaka, Bheki Khoza and Mfokamgquzula.
The live band and traditional dancers made the experience even merrier.
Kunene performed a number of songs with his live band before taking a few minutes to urge the audiences to get their jabs. He revealed that he had been vaccinated. umfokamgquzula also encouraged the audience to get vaccinated and ignore misinformation and myths about the vaccines.
He performed Mhla ngidikadikwa zinsizwa to a ululating audience.
Some were on their feet dancing to this tune, and his traditional dancers kept the audience entertained with their creative dance moves.
Thwalofu Namankentshane sang his hits, Umngcwabo uhlehlile, Nkosazane enhle and Unenhlanhla.
Among his dancers was a young boy who kept the audience screaming throughout the performance.
Khoza honoured the late David Ngcobo.
He sang the hits Hlangabezan’ abafana and How can I be hopeless in the land of plenty.
Nkunzemdaka followed with his team of traditional dancers – two women and three men.
He sang the hits, Bathakatha bezimele ngawe, Mhla sobaleka and Uyayizwa yin’ ingoma.
Phuzekhemisi wowed the audience with his super dancers. He sang his alltime hit Imbizo. Phuzekhemisi left the audience chanting for more. Each song had a meaning and a story behind it.
The show was organised by Sandile Ngidi in partnership with the KZN Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation. Linda Bukhosini was the concert’s artistic director.
