Councillor candidate charged with assault
WARD 6 Kwamsane IFP councillor candidate Mfundo Msweli, is facing a charge of assault after his girlfriend was assaulted.
Mtubatuba police confirmed a case of assault was laid against Msweli and he was currently out on bail after spending a weekend in police cells.
The incident was reported to police on October 8.
When the Daily News contacted the Kwamsane police station to confirm the case was opened, a constable said he had received the complainant and helped open the case. Msweli was due to appear in court on November 5, the constable said.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, using the case number given by the complainant to the paper, confirmed Kwamsane police were investigating a case of assault with the purpose to inflict grievous
bodily harm.
“The complainant alleged that on 5 October 2021 at 10pm she went to visit the suspect at his place of residence and on arrival they had an argument. The suspect then assaulted her with a stick on the body and sustained injuries.
“A case of assault with the purpose to inflict grievous bodily harm at Kwamsane police station for investigation. Police arrested a 39-year-old suspect and appeared in the Kwamsane Magistrate’s Court on October 11. The case was remanded to November 5, 2021.”
Contacted for comment, Msweli ignored our questions.
National IFP spokesperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, said his party was concerned about the allegations against Msweli and they were investigating the matter.
He said the IFP was against gender-based violence, and this matter was consequently receiving the urgent attention it deserved.
“The IFP’S Political Oversight Committee, working with the Daily (Election) Management Committee, will investigate accordingly.
“The IFP expects that while internal processes are under way, that the relevant law enforcement agencies investigate these allegations as per the dictates of the law,” said Hlengwa.
