ODDS AND ENDS

SAHRC: I watched the commissioners strolling on the pavements in Phoenix; I assume it was a visit to attain first-hand evidence. Now, the first thing that crossed my mind was why nearly five months after the fact? The next question was, where is the investigation crew and administrators? Surely if you investigate you take a troop of investigators with you, because you need to take the relevant affidavits from the witnesses in the said neighbourhood or will the commissioners depose their own affidavits and give evidence in their own case? So, we see this very odd appearance of the SA Human Rights Commission.the final question is, will their findings corroborate that of the detectives who have been appointed or will it focus on racism and gun control as alluded to before? | SAME GUY FROM WARNER BEACH

If all is fair in love and war, the controversy surrounding the beauty pageant in Israel has no real substance because why is only Israel singled out for criticism. The US has imposed total sanctions on Cuba for 50 years yet not one Muslim or black in this country spoke out against this suffering an entire country has to endure every day. Why? Are they less than humans? China alo has no human rights, where the world has seen the cruel suffering of minority

Muslims every day. This country will hold the winter Olympics in February; I did not see or hear any Muslim or black people shouting boycott the Olympics. Why don’t these same people boycott the US for the suffering of Cubans? | NARESH SINGH

I do not condone the looting that took place, but just imagine the number of people who would have been shot dead had the police been instructed to step up security in the places of business. Another Marikana incident during Ramaphosa’s rule. I am pretty sure he was avoiding more bloodshed on his hands. | SIMPHIWE MAJOKA

Two thousand kidnapping cases reported in South Africa over a period of three months is definitely something to be alarmed about. | JAN VENTER

POLITICS

I knew that Actionsa was a lapdog for the rich. Mashaba is not in charge, he is just a lead actor. Just pliers in the hands of an artisan. Steenhuisen and Mashaba were paid very well to close the door on the ANC. No wonder they were noisy during election season. | JACK TURROK

Now, imagine a world where minister Bheki Cele’s and his team allocated funds to recruit and properly train tens of thousands of future police officers, and build police stations in areas that still do not have SAPS presence. He should bring back retired former SAPS veterans to act as field training officers or mentors for first-year rookies; guaranteed this will give South Africa a quality level officer for the future. If this country is saturated with blue uniformed elite law enforcement, the barometer of violent crime will sink to way below half of what we have now. The next courageous move would be to fire the current top-level incompetents and replace them. This country will never survive with what the ANC has in its SAPS currently. It has already proved to be an unmitigated failure.

The EFF did not disclose its donors, so it seems the party has a general problem complying with the basic rule of law. Dread to imagine how they drive cars. | BARRY SMIT

The government led by Cyril Ramaphosa is incompetent. All bad things are on the rise in this country; it is collapsing. Maybe it is time we rethink politics; it has nothing to do with service delivery but more with the elite enriching each other. | LWANDLE MKHONZA.
