Round 4

South Africa 0,5 – 3,5 Sweden

GM K Solomon (2355) 0-1 GM N Grandelius (2655)

IM D Cawdery (2417) 0-1 GM E Blomqvist (2521)

FM D Barrish (2283) 0-1 GM T Hillarp Persson (2516)

IM W Kobese (2311) 0,5-0,5 GM J Westerberg (2476)

Ladies: South Africa 4-0 Honduras

Solomon was outplayed after some energetic play from the Swedish board one. Cawdery bravely entered a highly theoretical line of the Sicilian against a well prepared GM but soon had to shed material. Barrish was on the back foot when Black made a positional Queen sacrifice and soon after his king was caught in a mating net. Kobese had the better of the game but after missing his chance White was able to hold the draw.

A chess game is divided into three stages: the first, when you hope you have the advantage, the second when you believe you have an advantage, and the third, when you know you’re going to lose! – Savielly Tartakower
