Is South Africa’s parole system easily exploited?

-

Schabir Shaik was released on parole for being terminally ill as per report, and later he was found to be playing golf every day after this act by our correctional services. Zuma was also released on parole based on his health and unlawful release. Guess what? He is actively moving around, campaigning for the presidency and criticising the current president. The head must roll at that department. Arthur Fraser must be criminally prosecuted. He must be released. | FRASER KOMANE

Apparently, the parole law is a 1959 legislation. The same people who have been in Parliament and failed to amend this legislation are blaming the judges for interpreting the same legislation. | SIBUSISO BUTHELEZI

I learnt some scary things reading the judgment. It seems the judgment that the maximum time served before parole is considered to be 25 years. Walus was eligible for parole in 2005 (less than 13 years after sentencing). He served 17 years more than other prisoners sentenced to “life”. | GLADWIN MAKAKANE

The jails are not overcrowded. This is an excuse for mischief. You can’t have criminals staying in luxury. It’s this absurdity of giving too much consideration to criminals’ “well-being”; but total abandonment of victims at the same time. | GORDON

This is a message for all South African citizens. After the opening game at the Qatar Stadium, most people left except the Japanese supporters. They picked up all the mess left by other supporters and put the trash into bins. When they were asked why they cleaned the mess, they replied that in Japanese culture, dirt is frowned upon. It’s every Japanese person’s duty to clean any place before they leave. Everyone left without cleaning, so they did it for them. Japan is one of the cleanest places on the planet. A lesson for our destructive citizens to learn. | NARESH SINGH

South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (Sanral) is using Chinese contractors. Taxpayers deserve an answer urgently. The profits don’t stay in our country, so why? | JOE SOAP

I am sure the African National Congress Women’s League Task Team is proud of itself. They literally ensured women don’t find expression in the Top 6. Only two women reached the threshold and those women are contesting each other. Women are always prepared to be used as tokens to fight the battles of men as long as they find expression at the dinner table. | PHAPANO PHASHA

Apparently, the reason why the name of DD is not on the Presidential minimalist list is because he’s in Russia for a “medical” check-up after his car accident. On his return, he is going to surprise everyone. | TEBOGO MASHININI

First, the president cut short his trip to the UK during another event 2 months ago. Today he went back to the same place for another event; however, the situation is worse than before. Just wondering if he would also consider cutting his current trip short as load shedding is the new normal for South Africa. | RAPO RO MA

Pitbull owners are irresponsible, they refuse to see the dangers in their dogs. The communities are tired of asking nicely for people to keep their dogs away from children. When people are tired of their concerns being ignored this is what happens. | LUCY LU
